VANCOUVER, Jan. 30 -- Tao Kaiyuan, vice-president of the Supreme People’s Court of China, headed a delegation to Canada from Jan 29th to 30th.

During her visit in Ottawa, Tao met respectively with Puisne Justices Marshall Rothstein and Andromache Karakatsanis of the Supreme Court of Canada, members of the Canadian House of Commons including Marc Garneau, foreign affairs critic of Liberal Party, and Susan Gregson, assistant deputy foreign minister. While in Vancouver, Tao attended a symposium of the Institute of Asian Research of University of British Columbia and had discussions with representatives of the Chinese community and media.

Tao introduced the background when the decision to comprehensively advance law-based governance of China was made at the 4th Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, the overall aim, roadmap and far-reaching impact of comprehensively advancing law-based governance of China, and major measures on judicial reform. She also answered questions from the Canadian side including the relationship between the CPC leadership and rule of law, and how to better nurture rule of law professionals. Tao stressed that China firmly follows the path of socialist rule of law instead of replicating foreign rule of law ideas and models, and is willing to carry out more judicial exchanges and cooperation with other countries so as to draw their experience in this field.

The Canadian side said they pay close attention to the development and influence of rule of law in China, appreciate the positive progress registered in its judicial reform, and are willing to compare notes with China in this area.
