During the conversation, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) central committee, said the traditional friendly partnership between China and Vietnam had been strengthened since the establishment of diplomatic relations 64 years ago.

China and Vietnam shared common political systems, connective ideals and beliefs and similar development paths under the leadership of communist parties, Xi said, adding China had always attached great importance to their bilateral relationship.

China was willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Vietnam under the principles of "friendly neighborliness, comprehensive cooperation, long-term stability and looking toward the future" and the spirit of "good neighbors, good friends, good comrades and good partners."

Xi put forward a six-point proposal for developing the relationship: maintain high-level exchanges; deepen exchanges on governance; increase coordination and cooperation; create mutually beneficial and win-win framework; consolidate friendship between the two peoples; and resolve disputes through bilateral negotiation and friendly consultation to maintain stability in the South China Sea.

Xi also briefed Trong on the outcome of the third plenary session of the 18th CPC central committee, which would further deepen China's economic reform.

Trong spoke highly of the CPC session, hoping to advance Vietnam-China relations and increase political mutual trust to benefit the two nations and two peoples.

The two leaders also exchanged greetings on the upcoming Spring Festival.
