Portuguese President Meets with You Quan

Lisbon, July 4th--Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal, met here today with You Quan, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.

You conveyed the warm greetings from President Xi Jinping to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal, the bilateral relations have developed smoothly. In recent years, in particular, China and Portugal have maintained close high-level exchanges and solid political mutual trust, and achieved fruitful results in exchanges and cooperation in fields including economy, trade, science and technology, culture, and tourism. The CPC attaches great importance to developing China-Portugal relations and is willing to further strengthen exchanges and dialogues with major political parties in Portugal. China is willing to work with the Portuguese side to continue deepening mutual political trust, expanding practical cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, strengthening communication and coordination in international affairs, and jointly building the Belt and Road, so as to push China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asked You to convey his best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He said that the Portugal-China relations have a long history and the development of friendly cooperation with China is a common consensus among the political parties and all walks of life in Portugal. The Portuguese side highly appreciates China’s development achievements and its important contributions to world peace and development. Portugal has high expectations for further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and is willing to continuously strengthen practical cooperation with China in fields including economy, trade, finance, science and technology under the framework of the Belt and Road so as to bring benefits to the two peoples.

The CPC delegation led by You visited Portugal from 4th to 7th of July. During his stay in Portugal, You also met with Ana Catarina Mendes, Deputy Secretary General of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Jose David Justino, Vice President of Portuguese Social Democratic Party, and Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, and inspected a Chinese School of Vila do Conde.
