Port Moresby, September 7th—Li Xi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, met here today with Peter O'Neill, Leader of the People's National Congress Party and Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.
Li conveyed the greetings of General Secretary Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang to Prime Minister O'Neill. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 42 years ago, China-Papua New Guinea relations have achieved historic development. In recent years, the leaders of the two sides have met many times and reached important consensus on deepening exchanges and cooperation. In November, President Xi Jinping will travel to Papua New Guinea to attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. The further development of China-Papua New Guinea relations will usher in new opportunities. The Chinese side is willing to work together with Papua New Guinea to enhance political mutual trust, deepen inter-party exchanges, and expand mutually beneficial cooperation. Guangdong Province is willing to strengthen practical cooperation between the two places under the framework of China-Papua New Guinea friendship to push bilateral relations to new highs.
O'Neill asked Li to convey his best wishes to General Secretary Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. He said that Papua New Guinea is a good friend of China and the friendly relations between the two countries have always maintained strong development. He was grateful to China for its strong support for Papua New Guinea in holding the APEC meeting. Papua New Guinea is eagerly looking forward to President Xi Jinping's visit and will do its best for the guarantee work and expand exchanges and cooperation in all fields covering economy, trade, energy, people-to-people and cultural engagement, and tourism under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative with the Chinese side, especially Guangdong Province, in a bid to jointly promote new progress in bilateral relations.
At the invitation of the government of Papua New Guinea, Li led a CPC delegation to Papua New Guinea for a friendly visit. During his visit, Li respectively met with Job Pomat, Speaker of the National Parliament, and representatives of the main political parties in Papua New Guinea, and inspected projects aided by Guangdong Province in Papua New Guinea.
