Jakarta, August 30th—Megawati Sukarnoputri, Head of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and former Indonesian President, met here today with Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Megawati fondly recalled friendly exchanges of President Soekarno, the founding father of Indonesia, with China as well as her friendly exchanges with China. She said that the older generations of leaders of the two countries have forged a deep fraternal friendship, which has laid a solid foundation for bilateral relations. Indonesia attaches great importance to its relations with China, and hopes to strengthen friendly exchanges and practical cooperation with China in various fields, so as to promote the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries for greater development.

Megawati said that the PDI-P has maintained close and friendly exchanges with the CPC for a long time, and is willing to continue to deepen the strategic communication between the ruling parties of the two countries, strengthen the exchange of ideas and experience in party governance and state administration, promote cooperation in areas such as innovation and people-to-people and cultural engagement, and propel the building of a closer relationship between the two Parties. Against the background of profound and complex changes in the international and regional situations and geopolitical landscapes, the PDI-P is willing to work with the CPC to vigorously carry forward the Bandung Spirit and make new contributions to world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

Speaking highly of the outstanding contributions made by Soekarno and Megawati to the development of China-Indonesia relations during their tenure as presidents, Liu said that developing China-Indonesia relations is in line with the common and fundamental interests of the two countries and the shared aspirations of the two peoples. The Chinese side has always viewed bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and is willing to work with the Indonesian side to well implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, deepen the integration of development strategies, and earnestly promote practical cooperation under the framework of the “four-wheel drive” covering political, economic, cultural and maritime fields, so as to promote the building of the China-Indonesia community with a shared future to a higher level.

Liu said that the CPC attaches great importance to the friendly relations with the PDI-P. It is hoped that the two Parties will continue to consolidate political mutual trust, inherit traditional friendship, adhere to the concept of governing for the people, explore the path of independent development of respective countries, and make greater contributions to promoting peace, stability, development and prosperity of the region and world at large. The Bandung Conference established the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence as the basic norms governing international relations. As the world is entering a new period of turbulence and change, the Chinese side is willing to, together with Indonesia, continue to firmly support each other, jointly practice multilateralism, safeguard international fairness and justice, and work together to promote the building of a more just and reasonable global governance system.
