Liu Jianchao Meets with a Delegation from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement of South Sudan

Beijing, April 12th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC), met here today with a delegation of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) of South Sudan led by Secretary-General Peter Lam Both.

Liu stated that the CPC and the SPLM enjoy a deep traditional friendship. With the care and guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping and SPLM Chairman and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, the two Parties have established close exchanges and cooperation in various fields, effectively promoting the development of bilateral relations. The CPC is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with the SPLM, stands ready to continue mutual support on issues concerning each other’s core interests, and promotes exchanges in areas such as party building, poverty alleviation, primary-level governance, and youth, so as to push China-South Sudan relations for greater development and continue to enhance the well-being of the two peoples.

Liu said, recently, General Secretary Xi Jinping and President Salva Kiir attended the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting. General Secretary Xi Jinping elaborated on the CPC’s understanding of exploring the path towards modernization and proposed the Global Civilization Initiative. The Chinese side supports the South Sudanese side in exploring a development path suited to its own national conditions and is willing to give active support to South Sudan's cause of peace and development. The Chinese side is also willing to strengthen regional and international cooperation with the South Sudanese side, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Lam conveyed President Salva Kiir’s warm greetings to General Secretary Xi Jinping. He said that South Sudan admires the great success achieved by the Chinese people under the leadership of the CPC in developing the economy, improving people’s livelihood, and combating the COVID-19 pandemic, and thanks China for its valuable assistance in South Sudan’s development. South Sudan regards China as a strategic partner and appreciates the Chinese side's just stance in speaking up for South Sudan at the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations Human Rights Council. South Sudan firmly adheres to the One-China principle and supports China’s position on issues concerning its core interests. The SPLM values the brotherly friendship with the CPC, hopes to learn from the CPC’s experience in state governance and administration, and looks forward to strengthening exchanges between the two Parties in fields such as official training, women, youth, and poverty alleviation, so as to promote pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in areas such as agriculture, fishery, electricity, infrastructure, and local affairs and promote relations between the two Parties and the two countries to a higher level.

After the meeting, Liu and Lam signed a memorandum of understanding between the two Parties.
