Paris, October 10th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with Annie Genevard, Secretary-General of the Republican Party of France.

Liu said, during the presidency of President Charles de Gaulle in 1964, France became the first major Western country to formally establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. In 2004, during the presidency of President Jacques Chirac, China and France established a comprehensive strategic partnership. We applaud the Republican Party for the historic contributions to the development of China-France relations. For nearly 60 years, relations between the two countries have developed steadily, and both sides have jointly safeguarded multilateralism, promoted the world multi-polarity and exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. China-France relations go beyond bilateral scope and are of great global significance. In today's world, the economies of various countries are interconnected. And global challenges require joint responses of the international community. Both sides should strengthen coordination on international affairs, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, safeguard international fairness and justice, and make greater contributions to international and regional peace, prosperity, and stability.

China adheres to high-quality development, promotes high-level opening up, and is committed to creating a better business environment for foreign investors. We follow the path of peaceful development and promote Chinese modernization on all fronts, which will bring new opportunities for China-France cooperation in various fields. We hope that the Republican Party will continue to promote and contribute to China-France relations. The CPC is willing to strengthen exchanges with the Republican Party, enhance understanding, and jointly promote the development of relations between our two countries.

Genevard said, President Charles de Gaulle led France to establish diplomatic relations with China, and the leaders of the two countries forged friendship between the two countries. Calling economic and trade cooperation an important foundation for France-China relations, Genevard said more than 2,000 French companies invest and operate in China now, and two-way investment between the two countries continues to grow. The French side attaches great importance to strengthening cooperation with China in such areas as energy, environmental protection, and health, and hopes to actively promote economic cooperation and respective sustainable development in a balanced manner. France adheres to strategic independence, regards China as a major country with important global influence, and supports China in playing a greater role and jointly responding to global challenges with the French side.
