On 30 July 2021, Song Tao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, held a video talk with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Leader of the Brazilian Workers’ Party (PT) and former Brazilian President.

At the beginning of the video talk, Song Tao expressed appreciation for the congratulatory message the PT sent not long ago on the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China. Song Tao said, China has always viewed and developed the China-Brazil relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. In recent years, there have been close interactions at all levels between the CPC and the PT. Following the outbreak of COVID-19, exchanges and cooperation between the two parties have focused on epidemic prevention and economic reopening, which served to enhance friendship between the two peoples and promote the development of relations between the two countries. The CPC stands ready to work with the PT to follow through the consensus reached by top leaders of both countries, strengthen high-level communication, and deepen the sharing of experience on party building, economic development, social governance and poverty alleviation, with a view to improving governance capacity of both parties. Song Tao expressed his hope that the two sides further expand cooperation at sub-national level and in cultural and other fields, so as to ensure growing public support for China-Brazil friendship.

Song Tao noted that the once-in-a-century pandemic, compounded by profound changes unseen in a century, has had serious impact worldwide. However, peace and development remain the theme of the times, and all parties need to lend their firm support to multilateralism and international cooperation. As origin-tracing of the coronavirus is a serious scientific issue, China has always adopted an open, transparent and responsible attitude and taken the lead in cooperating with the WHO on global origin-tracing. It is believed that the PT would, adhering to its science-based and just stance, join China in opposing the practices of politicising origin-tracing and stigmatising the virus, and jointly promoting anti-epidemic cooperation and socio-economic development across the globe.

Song Tao then briefed the Brazilian side at great length on the main thrust of the important speech General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered at the rally celebrating the centenary of the CPC. In his speech, General Secretary Xi Jinping thoroughly reviewed the glorious centennial journey of the CPC as well as the great achievements and valuable experience. He solemnly declared that China had realised the first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and pointed out that China would remain committed to the path of peaceful development, work to build a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for humanity, and offer the world new opportunities with its new developments. China attaches great importance to Brazil’s important role in international and regional affairs. The CPC is willing to strengthen coordination with the PT in the international arena to jointly safeguard international fairness and justice and build a better world.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warmly congratulated the CPC on its 100th anniversary and spoke highly of the outstanding achievements the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has made in leading the Chinese people in promoting development. Lula believed that China’s success has provided meaningful reference for Brazil and other developing countries. He said that the PT attaches great importance to its friendly relations with the CPC and stands ready to strengthen exchanges and experience sharing on party governance with the CPC. Lula thanked the Chinese side for providing invaluable support to Brazil in the latter’s fight against COVID-19 and hoped to continue to strengthen cooperation with China in this regard. It is his hope that the two sides step up communication on international and regional issues, jointly uphold multilateralism, firmly oppose unilateralism and hegemony and contribute to world peace and development.

Shen Beili, Vice Minister of the IDCPC, was also present at the video talk.
