Liu Jianchao Meets with Vivian Balakrishnan, Member of the Central Executive Committee of the People's Action Party and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore

Beijing, February 20th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with Vivian Balakrishnan, Member of the Central Executive Committee of the People's Action Party and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore.

Liu said that in recent years, China-Singapore relations have seen strong momentum, and bilateral cooperation has achieved fruitful results in various areas. China is implementing the tasks set out in the 20th CPC National Congress, making every effort to promote economic and social development, and actively conducting exchanges and cooperation with other countries. Currently, China has effectively controlled the COVID-19 epidemic and its economy is recovering. The CPC is willing to work with the People's Action Party to implement important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen high-level exchanges and cooperation between political parties, and ensure that governance systems and capabilities better meet development needs. It is hoped that both sides can strengthen strategic alignment and work together towards modernization, promote cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative, scientific and technological innovation, culture, education, tourism, and local affairs, and further deepen the all-round cooperative partnership progressing with the times between China and Singapore.

Vivian said that China and Singapore are important comprehensive strategic partners. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the two countries helped each other and overcame difficulties together, which once again proved that China and Singapore are reliable partners and true friends. Although China and Singapore have different political systems, the People's Action Party and the CPC are both governing parties with important responsibilities and missions. The People's Action Party is willing to strengthen institutionalized exchanges with the CPC, have in-depth dialogues on leadership building, anti-corruption and other topics, and expand exchanges and cooperation between youth organizations, women's organizations, and local authorities. The Singaporean side hopes to quickly restore connectivity with China, increase cooperation in the areas including economy, trade, tourism, and education, and promote the comprehensive development of the bilateral relations.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern and expressed their willingness to promote China-ASEAN cooperation and cooperation in other fields, and jointly respond to complex challenges, so as to promote regional and world peace and development.

Chen Zhou, Vice-minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, and Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Development of Singapore, were present.
