Liu Jianchao Holds Discussions and Exchanges with Irish Think Tank Scholars

On June 23rd, Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, held discussions and exchanges with think tank scholars at the Institute of International and European Affairs in Ireland. About a dozen people, including former political heavyweights, diplomats, experts, and scholars of Ireland, attended the event.

Liu noted, the 20th CPC National Congress emphasized that our central task in the future is to unite and lead the people of all ethnic groups of China to build a modern socialist country in an all-round way, achieve the second centenary goal, and comprehensively promote the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with Chinese modernization. In order to achieve this goal, China will continue to deepen reforms, insist on expanding opening up, and adhere to green development; in order to achieve this goal, China will firmly pursue an independent foreign policy of peace, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and devote itself to building a community with a shared future for mankind. The Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping constitute important pillars of a community with a shared future for mankind. The Irish friends are welcome to participate in and support relevant major global initiatives.

Liu said, China and Ireland are located in the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. Although they are far apart, they have always respected each other and treated each other as equals. It is hoped that the political parties, governments, think tanks, and all walks of life of the two countries will strengthen exchanges and cooperation, deepen communication and dialogue, continuously enhance political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, promote people-to-people bonds, strengthen multilateral cooperation, and contribute to global development.

Experts and scholars from Irish think tanks spoke positively of China’s development achievements since the reform and opening up, and hoped to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, think tanks, people-to-people and cultural engagement between Ireland and China, and enhance mutual understanding and trust. They expected China to play a greater role in international and regional affairs.

Liu also shared his views upon enquiry on issues covering European security and the Ukrainian issue, relations between major countries, climate change, global governance, BRICS cooperation, and the international situation.
