Liu Jianchao Meets with Friedrich Merz, CDU Chairman and Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag

Berlin, October 12th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with Friedrich Merz, Chairman of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

Liu stated, since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Germany over half a century ago, both countries have consistently transcended cultural, institutional, and ideological differences and upheld the principles of equality, mutual benefits, and openness, and continuously advanced cooperation in various fields. It is hoped that both sides will respect each other's development paths based on their national conditions, accommodate each other's core interests, and remain committed to carrying out dialogue and consultation to bring China-Germany relations to a new level. In the face of complex and volatile international landscape, China and Germany should jointly defend the international order underpinned by international law and the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. Both sides should also work together to respond to global challenges and maintain international peace and stability.

Merz expressed, the German side attaches great importance to enhancing political, economic and trade relations with the Chinese side. The CDU/CSU Union values carrying forward friendly exchanges with the CPC. He hoped to strengthen dialogue, continuously enhance political mutual trust, and exchange views broadly on issues of common interest through political party channels with the Chinese side, so as to jointly ensure Germany-China relations at a high level continuously. The German side firmly supports trade liberalization, believing that healthy competition will benefit both sides. Merz expressed the readiness to further deepen economic and trade exchanges with the Chinese side, and encouraged enterprises from both countries to engage in investment and cooperation. Germany and China maintain good communication and coordination on multilateral affairs. The joint efforts of both sides can make important contributions to building global synergy. The German side opposes the "decoupling" of European Union (EU)-China relations and will adhere to mutual benefit and win-win cooperation between the EU and China. The CDU/CSU Union stands ready to actively contribute to the development of EU-China relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on a series of bilateral relations and international issues of common interest.
