Wellington, May 23rd—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with David Parker, New Zealand Labour Party Member of Parliament and Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs of the New Zealand Labour Party.
Liu said, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand, bilateral relations have maintained positive and stable development momentum on the whole, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. The two sides should take the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-New Zealand comprehensive strategic partnership as an opportunity to strengthen high-level exchanges and promote practical cooperation in various fields. Since the establishment of ties, the CPC and the New Zealand Labour Party have maintained friendly exchanges through various means, which has played a positive role in the development of China-New Zealand relations. The CPC is willing to strengthen exchanges between the two Parties, and deepen mutual learning on governance concepts, so as to achieve common development. In the face of the complicated international situation, China is ready to work with New Zealand and other members of the international community to promote the common values of mankind and promote world peace, security and development. Liu also elaborated on China's principled position on issues related to Xinjiang, Hong Kong and human rights.
Parker said, the New Zealand Labour Party attaches great importance to external relations and believes that New Zealand-China relations are one of New Zealand's most important bilateral relations. The Labour Party takes pride in numerous "firsts" in China-New Zealand relations during its administration. New Zealand and China have different political systems and cultures, but this does not prevent the two sides from having candid dialogue, respecting each other and seeking common ground while reserving differences. The Labour Party attaches importance to China's role in international affairs and hopes to strengthen exchanges with the CPC on issues such as how to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor and achieve common prosperity. New Zealand opposes trade protectionism and stands ready to jointly safeguard global free trade.
