Tokyo, May 30th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with Makoto Koga, former Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan.
Liu said, over the years, Mr. Makoto Koga has made great efforts to enhance political mutual trust between China and Japan and promote the development of bilateral relations, which reflects the courage and responsibility of a responsible politician and is admirable. The ever-lasting friendship between China and Japan serves the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples, and is also conducive to regional peace and development. The fine traditions of the older generation of leaders should be carried forward. Both sides should proceed from a strategic height and a long-term perspective, implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, abide by the principles established in the four China-Japan political documents, strengthen exchanges between political parties, and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance mutual understanding, establish a correct understanding, and promote the improvement and development of China-Japan relations.
Makoto Koga said, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and China, bilateral relations have made great progress. I am fortunate to get to know and work with the older generation of Chinese leaders to promote Japan-China friendship. This is a valuable asset in my life. A sound Japan-China relationship is beneficial to both countries and the world. Although there are some differences and challenges between Japan and China, what is important is that both sides are willing and able to maintain dialogue at all levels and in all fields and enhance mutual trust. Makoto Koga said, I am glad to learn that Japan and China have reached a consensus on restarting the exchange mechanism between the ruling parties. He expressed the willingness to continue to make efforts to promote Japan-China friendship.
