Trier, September 22nd—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with Wolfram Leibe, Mayor of the City of Trier.
Liu said, Trier is well-known in China, not only because of its long history, but also because it is the hometown of Karl Marx. Marx's most valuable ideological legacy is Marxism. China has combined the basic principles of Marxism with China's conditions and with the excellent traditional Chinese culture, embarking on a path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The CPC has led the Chinese people to turn China from a poor and backward country into the world's second largest economy. Marxism has changed China's history and the future of the Chinese people. China's success has proved the success of Marxism, and China's practice has also enriched and developed Marxism. Marx brought China and Trier closer. It is hoped that Trier will give play to its unique advantages and further strengthen sub-national exchanges and cooperation in various fields with China.
Leibe welcomed the CPC delegation. He said, boasting a history of 2,000 years, Trier is the hometown of Marx. We are proud of it. Trier and Xiamen city of China are sister cities, maintaining close exchanges and cooperation. In 2018, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, the bronze statue of Marx donated by the Chinese government was unveiled in Trier, becoming another symbol of Germany-China friendship. Trier hopes to deepen sub-national cooperation in green energy, medical care, digitalization and other fields on the basis of economic and trade cooperation with China, expand people-to-people exchanges, and promote Germany-China relations for better development.
