Jakarta, January 18th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC), delivered here today a speech titled "Development Path with Asian Characteristics: Asia’s Answer Amid Once-in-a-Century Changes" at the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI). The event was attended by Dino Patti Djalal, FPCI Chairman and former Deputy Foreign Minister, over 500 representatives from Indonesia’s political sector, think tanks, universities and media outlets, as well as envoys from various countries.
Liu noted that we celebrated the arrival of 2025 two weeks ago. But not all countries enjoy happiness and peace, as many nations and regions are still plagued by conflict and turmoil. Since the end of World War II, Asia has largely maintained peace and stability, fostering prosperity and development, and gradually bringing the vision of the “Asian Century” to reality. This can largely be attributed to Asia’s distinctive development path, which prioritizes independence, mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation.
Liu said that peace and stability are prerequisites for sustaining the development path with Asian features. Achieving greater development requires an environment free from war and unrest. Asia’s current stability and peace can be attributed to the Asian Way characterized by mutual respect, consensus-building, and accommodating each other’s comfort levels. To continue this path with Asian features, independence must serve as the foundation for sustainable development. The Bandung Conference held 70 years ago marked the start of Asian and African countries taking control of their destinies and embarking on the journey of independent and self-reliant development. The Bandung Spirit has become the basic norm for international relations. China stands ready to work with Indonesia to promote the Bandung Spirit in the new era, advance the Asian Way, practice the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and maintain a firm grasp on our future and destinies.
Liu expressed the key to a stable and enduring development path with Asian features lies in constantly prioritizing development and improving people's livelihoods. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has lifted 100 million people out of absolute poverty, achieving the UN 2030 Agenda’s poverty reduction goals a decade ahead of schedule. Similarly, Indonesia has made remarkable progress in poverty alleviation over the past decade, including President Prabowo Subianto’s initiatives after his inauguration, such as the Free Nutritious Meal Program. China is committed to working with Indonesia to implement the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and align Chinese modernization efforts deeply with Indonesia’s Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision to create better lives for the people of both countries.
Liu said, to continue the Asian development path, we must further uphold our unique Asian values and philosophies. The Asian development path is never an imported concept, nor is it a mere imitation of any textbook model. It is rooted in Asia’s rich culture, which enables Asian countries to prosper both individually and collectively by seeking harmony in diversity, reaching consensus through consultation, learning from each other, and embracing inclusivity. China is ready to work with Indonesia to practice the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), promote Asian values, and advance together through mutual respect, learning, and complementarity.
Liu stated that the ultimate goal of following the Asian development path is to promote common development and prosperity for all Asian countries and the Global South at large. The BRICS welcomes Indonesia as an official member. Its entry will strengthen the representativeness and influence of the BRICS mechanism. China is ready to cooperate with other BRICS partners to ensure steady progress in greater BRICS cooperation in the long term, leveraging the modernization of BRICS countries to advance modernization of the Global South.
Liu noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of China-Indonesia diplomatic relations. China is ready to work with Indonesia to implement the key consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Prabowo Subianto, fostering a China-Indonesia community with a shared future with regional and global influence, and firmly be practitioners, advocates, and leaders of the development path with Asian features, making new and greater contributions to the construction of a community with a shared future for Asia and mankind at large.
During the Q&A session, Liu answered questions on China’s foreign policy, Made in China 2025, China-Indonesia cooperation, China-US relations, and the prospects for BRICS cooperation, expounding on China's positions and perspectives.
Founded in 2014, the FPCI is now the largest think tank in Indonesia.
