SENATOR THE HONOURABLE
CLARENCE RAMBHARAT
MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, LAND AND FISHERIES

Chairman: the relationship between the People’s National Movement and the Communist Party of China remains a rarity in today’s environment. More than 50 years ago our political parties forged a friendship, a partnership and a mutual commitment towards the development of our respective nations.

We both understood then that to develop our nations our political parties must be developed first. Like China, Trinidad and Tobago’s development runs in parallel with the development of the People’s National Movement. Each landmark achievement was either a PNM achievement in totality or in vision and design.

The Communist Party of China has gone further. The world bears the watermark of China.

Our parties’ political dialogue running alongside our national dialogue is vital for the strength of our bonds and for continuity across time, leaders, leadership and change.

Our relationship is enduring.

For us in the People’s National Movement it is vital for our bond to be at the political and national level. It was the intention of our founder when he ventured to extend a warm hand of friendship to you in 1974. But it was not surprising. We had known each other for over a century before that. We had known each other’s struggles and the battle to lift both our nations and our people.

This political relationship has been mutually beneficial. We have learnt a lot and gained a lot. And you have received our incomparable support, rooted in our friendship and mutual trust.

Trinidad and Tobago became the first English-speaking Caribbean country to sign on to the Belt and Road Initiative. We did that on May 14 2018 during the official visit of our Honourable Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to China. We continue to stay the course.

For continuity, political parties must dialogue across borders. The enduring strength of the Belt and Road Initiative depends on the strength of our political parties. These dialogues are important because like we reflect today on Dr William’s foresight in 1974 and Dr Rowley’s vision in 2018, one day we will reflect on the value and quality of our engagement yesterday and today.
