The 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China concluded its fourth plenary session in Beijing last week, with the release of a communique and a decision.

The decision, adopted at the key Party meeting, emphasizes major issues concerning how to uphold and improve the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and advance the modernization of China's system and capacity for governance.

Ambassadors of Latvia, Ireland, Morocco, Grenada and Malaysia to China were interviewed on Friday for their thoughts on the plenum's outcome, as they were invited to attend a briefing held by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Let's find out what they had to say.

Q: What are your comments on the decisions made at the fourth plenary session?

The main thing is to serve the people of the country, and I'm sure the system is supportive to people if it's still improving, modernizing and moving forward in this global world.

Q: The world is facing unilateralism and uncertainties. What's your attitude on globalization and multilateralism?

The EU is a strong supporter of multilateralism. All efforts China is doing are also supportive. I think we are close partners in supporting multilateralism, and not supporting unilateralism.

Q: What do you think of China's efforts in global governance?

I think the (global) system needs the support of big countries. Some big countries are not supporting the system nowadays. So it is important that China stands by multilateralism.

Q: What's your comment on "one country. two systems"?

We value highly that China holds the principle of "one country, two systems". And yes, I think it gives the opportunity for the two systems to flourish. I think it's good that the principle was supported.

Q: What stood out most for you in the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee?

I think what stands out is China is grappling with new challenges, such as new economic and international challenges. The plenary is a useful chance for the (CPC) Central Committee to respond to these challenges, and to come up with proposals. This is very crucial to the development of China.

Q: The decision made during the Plenary Session was quite overarching. It includes many aspects such as environmental protection and economic development. What specific areas are you most interested in?

The area that I think everybody is interested in is the great progress that China has made from the 1970s and targets include the two century goals, poverty alleviation goal in 2020, the goal to become a medium-developed country in 2035 and to realize the second two century goals in 2049. We are also expecting to hear more, as years go by, from China's efforts in poverty elimination, progress in environmental protection and also in opening up so as to develop its economy even further. China's economy is going forward in a harmonious way into the future.

Q: What are you most interested in from the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee?

What I am most concerned about in this plenary session is the issue of the modernization of China's system and capability for governance. With continuous development, China needs a more modernized governance system. I think the main purpose of this plenary session is to make China's governance system more adaptable to modernization. It shows the Communist Party of China has the willingness and capability to keep pace with the times.

Q: The Fourth Plenary Session put forward the concept China will try to promote common development of all the countries in the world. What's your opinion of this?

I believe the plenary is very important, and I do believe it will continue to strengthen the Party and therefore strengthen the country. So with that I believe that it will help to strengthen the entire world for common development for other countries, such as my own country, the small island of Grenada.

Q: What are your thoughts about China's Belt and Road Initiative? How do you think China can cooperate with countries like Grenada?

Just recently, there was a session in Grenada on the BRI forum. This session in itself was to promote the BRI in the Caribbean areas. We understand we have become part of the Belt and Road. Grenada is a strong supporter of the Belt and Road Initiative. We are definitely looking forward to the future with the Belt and Road Initiative.

Q: What role do you think the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee will play in China's future development?

This is a very significant event in the evolution of China's history. I think it's the first time China has dedicated all its time to the issue of governance. Different countries have to settle on their own formal governance. The system which China has right now has clearly worked for the past 70 years, given the great economic and social progress China has experienced since 1949.

Q: Which one of the following issues impresses you the most: politics, ecological administration or economics?

It is the quality of governance which impressed me, in terms of how China has been very responsive to the aspirations of the people, as well as how China has been very clearly realizing many challenges, including ecological civilization. The Chinese government is very efficient and effective in coping with these major issues.

Q: The decision of the plenary session emphasized building an open world economy. In a world full of uncertainties, what do you think of China's commitment to that?

I think it is very important China continues to support multilateralism. It is very important we continue to work with countries like China as we continue to emphasize the importance of a global trading system. This is the only way for many other developing countries, including Malaysia and China, to continue our upward path of economic growth.
