Beijing, January 7th—The International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC) held here today on the morning the Roundtable Dialogue with the UK Cross Party Parliamentary Delegation. Liu Jianchao, Minister of the IDCPC, Lu Kang, Vice-minister of the IDCPC and relevant officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University attended the dialogue. Alan Gemmel, Labour MP and PPS to the Foreign Secretary and MPs of the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, and the Liberal Democrats, and representatives of the British Embassy in China, the Great Britain-China Centre, and the China-Britain Business Council were present. Both sides had candid and in-depth exchanges on topics such as China-UK relations and global governance and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Chinese side stated that last November, President Xi Jinping met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, charting the course for the development of China-UK relations. The two sides need to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, adhere to political dialogue, properly handle differences, focus on common interests, promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional affairs, and benefit the two countries and the world with a stable and mutually beneficial China-UK relationship. AI is both a global opportunity and a major challenge. The two sides should strengthen cooperation and jointly promote the global AI industry for open, inclusive, universal, fair and safe development.

The British side stated that the Labour government hopes to develop a predictable, stable and pragmatic bilateral relationship with China. Major political parties in the UK are willing to strengthen contacts and exchanges with China and expand cooperation in areas such as economic growth, trade, investment, green transformation, and addressing climate change. Britain and China should strengthen bilateral and multilateral exchanges and cooperation in AI to jointly seize opportunities and meet challenges.
